A 31st minute goal by striker Norizan Salaman was enough for the FAM Cup league leaders to collect the three points needed for their 14th win in 15 matches and confirm a top-two finish in the 10-team league.
With five matches remaining, Penang are 19 points ahead of the third-placed Kuantan FA and will grab one of the two promotion berths to the second-tier competition next year.
Against YBU FC, Penang were made to slog to break down the opposition’s defence. The breakthrough came after the half hour mark when Muhammad Aminuddin managed to wriggle behind the YBU backline and sent a pin-point cross from the byline for Norizan to tap in from close range.
YBU’s Mohd Aliff had a glorious chance to equalise just before the break but saw Penang goalkeeper Amir Omar Khata produce an acrobatic save to keep his effort out.
Penang lived dangerously in the second half but managed to protect their slender lead.
“The players were under tremendous pressure to win today, and it showed in their nervous display,” said Penang coach Merzagua Abderrrazak.
“But they did enough to secure the three points needed for promotion. I am happy to achieve the target in just my first season here, and now we will switch our focus to confirm the FAM Cup title.”
With second-placed PBAPP FC losing 1-2 to Malacca, Penang can be crowned FAM Cup league champions if they can beat Kuantan Port at the Darulmakmur Stadium on June 2.
