FAM CUP league leaders Penang notched their second triumph in as many weeks over PBAPP FC with a 2-1 victory at the City Stadium.
Winger Mohd Baser Napae was the toast of the Panthers, as his brace in the 16th and 40th minutes allowed Penang to notch their 11th straight league win.
Second-placed PBAPP had vowed not to fall a second time to their fellow Penang-based side, but found themselves trailing after just a quarter of an hour.
Mohd Baser latched onto a superb through ball from Mohamad Hisyam before rounding PBAPP goalkeeper Megat Faisal and slotting into the empty net.
Baser got his second goal of the game five minutes before half time when he rose unchallenged to head home Khairan Eroza’s floated freekick.
PBAPP, who started the day second and seven points behind the leaders, stepped up a gear in the second half.
But they were let down by poor finishing and bad luck after hitting the Penang woodwork four times. Three of those near misses were from striker Amir Shahreen Mubin, who contrived to hit the post after rounding the Penang keeper and had a gaping goal to aim at.
Amir Shahreen gained some consolation for his misses after finally finding the target in the 84th minute to reduce the deficit.
“After losing last week, the pressure was on PBAPP to perform,” said Penang coach Merzagua Abderrazzak.
“I told my players to play a relaxed game and they responded with two first half goals. Although we were on the backfoot in the second half, my players were comfortable out on the pitch and I was confident of taking the three points.”
Penang lead the 11-team FAM Cup standings with a maximum 33 points from 11 games, followed by PBAPP (23) and Harimau Muda C, who drew 1-1 with Chebagoo in Kota Kinabalu, on 19 points.
